The Classic Staunton Chess set is the most recognizable style of chess set and is also the style deemed appropriate for use in chess competitions. Named after English chess master Howard Staunton, the Staunton Chess set was first released in 1849, and is here replicated in fine metal by Manopoulos.

The Chessmen
The Staunton chess pieces are universally recognized and associated with chess. These classic chess pieces include the realistically-carved horse head of the Knight, the most intricate and distinct piece of any chess set. The Staunton Knight was likely inspired by a sculpture on the east pediment of the Parthenon. The King’s column is topped with a crown and cross, while the Queen’s crown is topped with a tiny ball. Also recognizable are the crenellated battlements of the Rook and the Western-style headgear of the Bishop.
