Description

Sharing deep cultural value and timeless design, Manopoulos Chess sets are created through the skills of gifted sculptors, designers, and craftsmen. Each chess set showcases aspects of Greek civilization and European history, from playing pieces which draw on notable historical and mythical figures and famous works of art, to themes taken straight from the history and mythology of Greece, Manopoulos Chess sets are sure to inspire.

The Greek Mythology Chess set takes inspiration from the story of how the city of Athens got its name. This glorious city was in dispute between two gods: Poseidon, the God of the Sea, and Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom. After both gods made an offer to the citizens of the city, Athena’s gift was preferred, and thus, the city was named for her and carries her name to this day.

The Chessmen
Greek sculptors loved to recreate this divine conflict through their art. The King is a replica of the famous statue “Poseidon of Melos” (2nd cent. B.C.), and the Queen represents the glorious “Athena Promachos” (450 B.C., Acropolis Museum). A bronze Hellenistic statue has inspired the Bishop, and the Knight is a part of the marble facade of Parthenon sculpted by Pheidias. The castle is a reproduction of one of the most admirable Attic steles devoted to young Aristion who died in battle. Finally, the Pawn is a bronze statue of a fully armed warrior in 500 B.C.
