Description
As citizens of a country that holds many secrets and stories, the Lebanese people exist in a mélange of cultures, ideologies and backgrounds, unable to define their identity. For Tamara Zantout, author and producer of Drawing Lines, having lived in London for most of her childhood, she sought to understand her own identity and attachment to Lebanese culture, which had been idealized into a romanticized notion of nationalism, and compare it to her experience of re-entering the Lebanese sphere. Using graffiti as a focal point, Ms. Zantout shares her quest into defining Lebanese identity through the years of war, and into today. The challenge she put to herself was to adopt a voyeuristic approach to street art whilst maintaining the duality of the detached observer. The book, Drawing Lines, is the result of that challenge, and an attempt to understand how different and diverse local and foreign artists communicate Lebanese identity.
