Description
The Sydney Line depicts the skyline of Sydney as seen from Mrs. Macquarie’s Point, a picturesque vantage point named for Elizabeth Macquarie, the wife of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales in the early 1800s. Iconic reference points include Sydney Tower, Chifley Square, the Sydney Opera House, and Harbour Bridge which connects the city’s north side with the center of Sydney.
The most populous city in Australia, Sydney was the first European colony to be established in Australia, by Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788.
Sydney is an international tourist destination that is as celebrated for its historic central district, The Rocks, as for its two best-known sights, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. It is home to Australia’s most important museums, such as the Australian Museum, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Sydney Museum.
Two hundred and fifty different languages are spoken in the city, and a third of its inhabitants speak a language other than English at home.
