Conceived in honor of the animal kingdom, the Whale Chair is one-of-a-kind piece exclusive to Cities and is part of the Animal Chair collection, presenting a highly detailed and accurate sculptural reproduction of an animal which is combined with the seating. The Whale Chair consist of an internal steel frame and is made of polyurethane with leather seating. Riera chose the chair as his focus because it is a common, everyday object, but it is also necessary to our daily lives. His goal was to inject the chair with a sense of vitality and to create a stronger connection between the spectator, the piece, and the surrounding space.
The Whale Chair represents a biologically accurate reproduction of a whale’s tail, retaining the animal’s natural vitality. Created as an homage to the beauty of the whale and the whole animal kingdom which inhabits our planet as an attempt to reflect and capture the beauty of this living thing.
About the Brand
Máximo Riera has been a practicing artist for over 30 years, predominately working in photography, painting, and sculpture. Inspired by his travel and experiences through Europe and the Caribbean Islands, Máximo’s vibrant use of color and evocative attention to detail have been an inspiration which convey the meaning of his creations. His work also demonstrates a predominant influence from abstract expressionism and the Pop Art movements. Born in Asturias, Northern Spain, Máximo has now retired to his studio in Cadiz where he paints and sculpts each day. His most notable creations are his Animal Chairs collection, Millennial Consoles, and his artwork.
