The first U.S. Navy vessel put to sea; the USS Constellation was one of the original six frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794. The ship’s name was taken from a list submitted to President George Washington and makes reference to the Flag Act of 1777 which speaks of the stars in the flag as “representing a new constellation.”
A 38-gun wooden-hulled, three masted frigates, the USS Constellation was designed with great strength and speed. Launched on 7 September 1797 she was the first U.S. Navy vessel to engage and defeat an enemy vessel.
